International Volunteers Day

International Volunteers Day is observed globally on December 5th each year. This date offers a chance to acknowledge and celebrate the remarkable achievements of volunteers, and their incredible impact on society.

Do you have volunteers in your organisation that you’d like to thank?

Are you a volunteer doing great things to support a worthy cause?

Tell us about it in the comments below – and we can help to share your good news. We wish to thank our wonderful team of Royal Borough Ambassadors.

Royal Borough Ambassadors are a legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games when 250 volunteers were recruited and trained to support events held at Eton Dorney Lake. At that time, they were known as the Eton Dorney Ambassadors and the scheme was so successful many wanted to continue to volunteer at events held locally in the Royal Borough. 10 years on the Royal Borough Ambassadors are still going strong and new recruits are actively encouraged to join.

Ambassadors regularly support annual events such as the 21 Gun Salute for the monarch’s birthday, Royal Windsor Flower Show, Windsor Duck Race, En Plein Air, Frogmore House Charity Open Days, Windsor Running Festival, Battle of Britain Service, Pumpkin Party, Christmas light switch-on events and so on. Over the last 10 years the Ambassadors have also played a very important role in State Visits, Royal Walk Abouts, Royal Weddings, a Royal Funeral and Jubilee Events.

The primary role of a Royal Borough Ambassador is to keep event participants and spectators safe and secure. Ambassadors will often work alongside the police, professional stewards, the military and royal protection officers. They are easily recognised in their red uniforms and usually relied upon for their local knowledge. Ambassadors also play a customer service role, ensuring that visitors feel welcome, are informed about what’s happening, know where to find local amenities and, if necessary, help when a problem occurs such a child gone missing or a medical emergency.

We take today to express our gratitude to our fantastic team of Royal Borough Ambassadors; next time you see one, stop and say hello – they are a brilliant bunch, proud to offer their time to Windsor.

Thank you to all volunteers, whoever you are and wherever you are.
